The proposed cuts from LIHEAP, a program which helps get natural gas and electricity to poor people in Illinois, were front and center in a committee hearing room Thursday.

Sen. Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) questions the attorney general's public utilities counselor, Susan Sattur, about the budget cuts the governor’s office made.

Hunter: “Is this action, in your opinion, legal?”

Sattur: “We would have to go back and listen to all the circumstances, and I can’t do that just sitting here today.”

Hunter: “I would like you all to review this entire matter – officially.”

Others say the impact is relatively small, since so many LIHEAP dollars are federal, anyway. LIHEAP stands for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
