This is Lightning Safety Awareness Week in Illinois, with the message that "when thunder roars, go indoors." While there were no lightning-related deaths in Illinois last year, 27 people across the country were struck and killed while doing things like fishing, working, camping, and riding motorcycles.
That's why it's important to take the advice "when thunder roars, go indoors" according to State Emergency Management Agency spokesman Patti Thompson.

Less than 10% of the people who are struck by lightning are killed, but survivors often face life-long health problems like nerve damage, chronic pain, and dizziness.
