A new law creates an “Office of New Americans” in Illinois. The House sponsor, State Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero), says it's an effort of both the Illinois Department of Human Services and the governor's office. Why would an immigrant choose Illinois? “We've proven that we are a state who welcomes all, and I believe that is felt,” says Hernandez. “There is an opportunity for a family to start here. This state has given that direction.”

Hernandez says the idea is not directed toward, nor is it shutting out, people here illegally. She says it's for people from all parts of the world who are living in all parts of Illinois.
