A man with ties to South Roxana is one of six U.S. Marines that died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan late last week. 23 year old Corporal Jesse Stites lived in the area from 1993 until 2003 before moving to Florida with his family. He was a crew chief aboard the helicopter, which transported Marines and equipment to combat zones.
Stites was expected to complete his Afghan tour in March. Stites attended Roxana Middle School and one year of high school before moving to Florida. He is survied by his wife, his mother and two sisters. Funeral arrangements are pending, but it is believed that he will be laid to rest near his wife's hometown in Iowa.
