There’s officially a new sheriff in Madison County. John Lakin was sworn in Monday morning, taking over duties as the county’s top cop. Lakin beat his former boss in the Democratic Primary Election in March and ran unopposed in the November election.
Lakin left his job as a major with the sheriff's department three years ago to work as police chief in Glen Carbon, but said in a previous interview with The Big Z that he has always wanted to be the county’s top cop.

Lakin replaces long-time Sheriff Bob Hertz, who said his goodbyes at the Madison County Board meeting last month.
