With just a little over a year to go in his federal drug sentence, a former prominent attorney in the metro-east will face a sex charge on the state level.  L. Thomas Lakin is now charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse against a teenage boy.  The young man was between the ages of 13 and 16 when the assault allegedly occurred in 2005.

A special prosecutor was assigned to the state case, and filed the new charge, a class 2 felony, today (Monday).  In 2008, Lakin was sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to three federal charges related to cocaine distribution.  He is scheduled for release November 30, 2012.  The former Democrat power-broker pleaded to possession with the intent to deliver cocaine, distributing cocaine to a person under 21, and maintaining drug-involved premises.   In exchange for the guilty plea on the federal drug charges, prosecutors agreed to drop sex charges, which accused Lakin of sexual activity involving teens of both sexes.
