A student housing facility and resource center has opened in Chicago, and Gov. Pat Quinn hopes it can serve as a model for future projects in areas of need across the state.  The state provided $8.4 million of the $12.2 million cost of constructing the La Casa student housing development and resource center. La Casa will house 100 college students and five resident advisors.

The adjacent resource center provides students with a quiet environment to study and will provide ongoing academic support. The aim is to help increase the number of students in the mostly Latino neighborhood who obtain bachelor’s degrees.  “It really is a model,” Quinn said. He says students tend to do better with cooperative learning. “You know some subjects in college can be pretty hard and helping your fellow student getting through a tough course, statistics, physics, you name it, very important, and this is a good model for everyone and we’re going to take it on the road.”
