Transportation projects are on this year’s to-do list for U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk.
Among Kirk’s priorities are getting a transportation funding bill passed in Congress, and reintroducing legislation to allow existing interstate highways to be converted into toll roads. Kirk says finding support for the bill in 2011 was tough.
“I think the big battle that I had was on people who had gas stations,” Kirk said. “They really were against any kind of tolling, and that was probably the one roadblock I could not overcome.”

Kirk also wants to explore using public-private partnerships to improve locks and dams along the Mississippi River, and says he’s approached Archer Daniels Midland about its potential involvement in those projects.
