U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Hoffman Estates), running for U.S. Senate, doesn’t want anyone to forget the letter to Iran that the incumbent signed.
Sen. Mark S. Kirk (R-Ill.) was one of 47 Republican senators who in March signed a letter to Iran, saying that any nuclear limitation deal would have to be approved by Congress, which may not agree with what the administration negotiates. Duckworth views signing that letter as a betrayal.
“You do not undermine your own nation in a letter to a foreign head of state of another country that has ‘death to America’ as their slogan when you are a representative of this country. I think it’s absolutely irresponsible,” she said.
As for her own position on Iran, Duckworth says the U.S. should continue negotiations, with the best interests of the U.S. and Israel in mind, and not allow Iran to get its hands on nuclear weapons.
Kirk is up for re-election next year. Duckworth may have to get through a Democratic primary to oppose him.
