Illinois has been hit hard by this year’s flu season. So far there have been 368 people admitted to hospitals’ intensive care units and 27 deaths resulting from the flu. But with the high number of flu cases, there are still those who have not gotten a flu vaccine. Some may think they do not need the shot.

They haven’t gotten sick yet, so why spend the money? Others might not have gotten the shot because they believe the shot is dangerous or may give them the flu. Dr. Vidya Sundareshan, an assistant professor of infectious diseases at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, says, “Most of the times, people are worried about the symptoms. They feel that the flu shot in itself can give them the flu. But in reality if they actually have the flu the symptoms might be almost ten times worse than what they could experience with the vaccine.”
