Lawmakers in the Illinois House have adopted tough new spending limits for the upcoming budget year. The House passed a resolution upping the state’s pension payment, cutting medicaid spending by about 25 percent, and requiring reductions in most other areas of state government as well.

Representative Dwight Kay of Glen Carbon says the new budget won’t be pretty, but that it’s time to make some tough choices and get the state on firmer fiscal footing.

Kay comments

The measure also sets aside money to start paying down the state’s huge backlog of bills.
