It appears an Illinois Supreme Court Justice will remain on the bench for another term. Lloyd Karmeier survived a late barrage of negative advertising by the group “Campaign for 2016” which spent millions of dollars to try to convince voters to vote against retention. Karmeier received just over the 60-percent needed to remain in office.
In fact, the total sits at 60.6-percent voting “YES” on the question with provisional ballots still to be counted. “Campaign for 2016” was heavily funded by trial lawyers and law firms who tried to connect donations to Karmeier’s campaign to some of his past verdicts. Supporters of the southern Illinois Justice believe there will be recounts and other legal challenges over the retention vote.
