The alleged killer of a Granite City man last June is now charged in Madison County juvenile court. Investigators believe a 16-year-old from Granite City struck 35-year-old Jack Hoppe of the 2500 block of State Street in Granite City and drove off. Hoppe may have been sleeping on the bike trail when he was hit.
An autopsy revealed multiple broken bones and internal injuries, and listed the cause of death as blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen caused by a motor vehicle. Hoppe’s body was found on the bike trail about 100 yards north of Victory Drive/Terminal Avenue. The juvenile is charged with Reckless Homicide, and Failure to Report an Accident Involving Personal Injury or Death. The case will remain in the juvenile court, where penalties can range from supervision or probation to incarceration with the juvenile Department of Corrections.
