An Alexander County judge has blocked Governor Pat Quinn from closing down the Dwight and Tamms prisons. The injunction also blocks the closures of halfway houses and youth detention facilities. AFSCME went to court to block the closures, which is a part of a budget cutting plan by the governor. Quinn says he plans to appeal the decision.
The state's largest employees union says moving inmates away from Tamms will put prison workers in danger. The judge wants Quinn to work out safety issues with the union before closing the prisons. In the meantime, AFSCME wants Quinn to just drop the closure plan altogether.
