The Stadium Theater in Jerseyville is on track to reopen in a little over a month. New owner Steve Dougherty reports that he has signed a contract for the building and plans to make a few changes and updates before opening the doors in about six weeks. Former owner AMC closed the two-screen theater late last year and put it up for sale.
A grass-roots social media campaign to keep the theater open began even before the doors were closed, and once it closed, many on-line began putting pressure on AMC to lower the price of the building which they alleged was overpriced. Dougherty, who also owns a theater in Litchfield and operates another in Carlinville, became interested and began negotiating with AMC and finally made the deal last weekend. He says he plans to improve the sound quality to digital as well as improve the screen and is looking into possibly bringing 3D viewing. Movie prices will be $6 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under, and matinee shows will be $5 per person.
