A pilot program to bring high-speed Internet to rural Americans is being tested locally through Madison Telephone Company of Staunton. It's called "Better Broadband, Better Lifeline." Citizen's Utility Board spokesman Jim Chilsen says this pioneering federal project should be a good deal for those who qualify.
To qualify, you must live within the service territory of one of the seven phone companies and be without Internet service for at least the last 60 days, and receive some form of government assistance. The deadline to sign up for the program is Oct. 31. Customers interested in seeing if they qualify for the pilot project should call toll-free 1-855-438-6693.
