A mother sleeping on a sofa with her infant son may have accidentally rolled over on the child, leading to its death on Thursday. The child was found unresponsive when paramedics were called to an apartment at Belle Manor on Belle Street in Alton yesterday morning. The infant was pronounced dead a short time later at St. Anthony's Hospital and Alton Police are investigating.
The Madison County Corner's report says emergency responders found nearly two month old Jace R. Gillespie in cardiac arrest and transported him to St. Anthony's where he died. The mother, Wallisha Bland of St. Louis, told authorities she fell asleep on the couch with the child and a 16 month old prior to the discovery. An exact cause of death remains under investigation by both police and the coroner's office and no charges have been filed.
