America’s Central Port along the Mississippi River in Granite City had a recent visit from a delegation of India. The Minister of Road Transport Highways and Shipping of India, the Consulate General and other government officials spent time in the area last Thursday.
The visit was part of a tour of U.S maritime facilitates in order to understand the infrastructure, capacities and importance of waterway transportation in the United States. The Indian delegation heard about the history of the port district facility, its operations and recent infrastructure investments and expansion before taking a tour. The delegation also visited the Mel Price Locks and Dam and the new harbor in Madison. The group is also here to learn about how to combat India’s growing number of highway deaths. The nation had four times as many traffic fatalities than the U.S. last year and is looking at ways to improve shipping to get some freight off the highways.
