Illinois is a national leader when it comes to making the most out of a federal tax credit for historic preservation efforts. Illinois Historic Preservation Agency Spokesman Chris Wills says a new report from the National Park Service and Rutgers University measured the effectiveness of the credit.

The program generated 807-million dollars in private spending on historic preservation and created nearly 12-thousand jobs in Illinois. Some of the projects that benefited from the tax credit include the opening of the new Virgin Hotel in Chicago and revitalizing Rockford's Peacock Brewery.
