Role model, veteran, and humanitarian. Those are three of the words State Representative Dwight Kay of Glen Carbon used to describe Stan "The Man" Musial as he sponsored a resolution in the Illinois House earlier this week. House Joint Resolution 23 establishes January 19th as "Stan Musial Day" in the State of Illinois.
Kay says this measure is not an alternative to naming the new Mississippi River Bridge after Musial.
Kay also says that he supports including Musial's name in the name of the new bridge because Musial a veteran himself.
Musial spent his entire 22-year playing career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a three-time National League Most Valuable Player, a seven-time N.L. batting champion, and was instrumental in helping the Cardinals win three World Series titles in the 1940's. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1968 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. Musial passed away on January 19, 2013 at the age of 92.
