Illinois is the fifth in the nation when it comes to the greenest buildings in America, according to the U.S. Green Building Councils annual top ten list of LEED certifications. According to Scot Horst, senior vice-president of Leed, the buildings in Illinois with the most certifications are existing buildings, the majority being commercial. He also mentioned environmentally friendly, low-income residential projects that are being built.

One of the reasons Horst gives for Illinois’ success with Green buildings is the leadership of Illinois politicians. “You happen to have had some very excellent leadership in terms of green building and environmental issues and it’s one of the reasons Illinois is such a wonderful place to go visit,” Horst said. Some factors used to determine if a building is green include electricity and water conservation, minimized impact on the environment, and creating better air quality.
