A Mexican National who was residing in Granite City has been sentenced on Monday to one year and one day in federal prison. His charge is one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by an Illegal Alien. 44-year-old Jose Galvan-Lopez pled guilty to the federal charge on August 10th. He has been held in custody since his arrest in Granite City on May 8th of 2015.
At his change of plea hearing in August Galvan-Lopez admitted to being an illegal alien and that he had been deported from the US to Mexico, and that he did purchase a stolen 9mm assault rifle and ammunition for $50 cash, in St. Louis. Galvan Lopez also acknowledged that he will be deported again. The investigation was conducted by the Granite City Police Department and by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency. The case is assigned to Assistant United States Attorney Robert L. Garrison.
