An Alton building that has housed its share of national chain restaurants will soon open as an IHOP restaurant. The International House of Pancakes will move in to the former Denny's Diner restaurant and will open this fall. Renovations on the building, that sits along the Homer Adams Parkway across from Alton Square, are currently underway. The building has been vacant for the past five years.
Before changing to Denny's, the building was briefly a Big Boy, and started out as a Shoney's Restaurant. The owner of the new restaurant, Khalid "Kal" Ramadan of St. Charles County, Missouri, owns the franchise for Alton and O'Fallon, Illinois, and the plan is to open sometime in mid to late September, and hire about 100 people. The new IHOP will initially be open for 24 hours, and then depending on the level of business, will determine if it's the right plan. Morrissey Construction of Godfrey is handling the new construction.
