Keep clean in the pool this summer. That’s the message from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Memorial Day weekend means the pools and beaches are open. But before you dive in, IDPH wants swimmers to focus on hygiene. Swimmers can get sick from bacteria found in the water and sometimes it’s the swimmers that contaminate a pool. Several germs can be spread through contact with fecal matter.

IDPH offers these tips to keep your pool clean and swimmers healthy.

  • Don’t swim within 14 days of having diarrhea.
  • Don’t swallow pool water.
  • Practice good hygiene. Shower with soap before and after swimming.
  • Take your kids on bathroom breaks often.
  •  Change diapers in the restroom, not poolside.
  • Wash your children thoroughly before they go swimming.
  • When swimming in lakes and rivers:
  • Avoid swimming after a heavy rain.
  • Look for storm drains along the beach and avoid them.
  • Look for trash or other signs of pollutants and avoid that area
