Freezing rain and icy roads plauged the evening rush hour throughout the Riverbend last night. Police and fire officials in the area began responding to calls around 5 p.m. and were bombarded with reports of vehicles sliding off the road, multiple car crashes, vehicles overturning and even an incident that involved an Alton Police squad car.
Several area roads were shut down as emergency officials were overwhelemed and had to give crews a chance to treat the roads with salt. Even that proved to be tough however as there was at least one report of a salt truck from the Alton Public Works becomming stuck after it slid down George Street.
Eventually all of the closed roadways were reopened and they remain open this morning, though Police do urge motorists to be careful and drive slow as there are still patches of black ice on area roadways.
