A plan to coordinate future development in an area along Interstate 55 and Highway 143 in Madison County has been approved by the Madison County Board. The board joins Edwardsville and Glen Carbon in adopting the I-55 Development Code for a 7.5 square mile area that is seeing a growing interest from developers.
The corridor lies east of the Edwardsville and Glen Carbon city limits along the interstate where there has already been some construction. The three government bodies joined forces to look at the future of the area, and incorporated input from residents, business owners, developers and elected officials to come up with standards for future development. The plan features town centers, a mixed-use commercial area near I-55 and Highway 143 and residential neighborhoods. The efforts earned the communities the “Leadership in Planning” award from the East-West Gateway Council of Governments for the public planning process. Fifteen public meetings were conducted as part of the planning process.
