The Alton Housing Authority has a bed bug problem. The AHA has hired an extermination company to deal with the infestation that is sometimes difficult to contain because it is spread so easily. Bed bugs can be found nesting not only in beds but also furniture, blankets, stuffed animals, and clothing. They can hide in and travel on those items and find new homes very quickly even outside the apartments.
Alton Housing Authority residents have been notified and the AHA has spent about $35-thousand so far this year to deal with the problem. It's an up to four hour process to treat an apartment for bed bugs using excessive heat to kill the bugs and their eggs. Bed bugs have been in the news in recent years following outbreaks in national hotel chains, and this local problem is being dealt with in a similar way.
