The Illinois House made a symbolic vote against any wage increases for state employees who are in a union. Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who sponsored the resolution, says it’s designed to send a message to negotiators on both sides that the House won’t stand behind any wage increase.
Republican Representative Dwight Kay (pictured) of Glen Carbon says moving forward, he would like to see the state take into consideration many factors during negotiations.
The resolution, which now heads to the Illinois Senate, was approved on an 84-29 vote. The resolution covers only the current budget year, which ends on June 30, 2013.
