The sign on the historic Hotel Stratford in Downtown Alton has fallen into disrepair over the last few years, but the building's owner and president is taking some time to spruce it up.  The sign, in the opinion of many, is just as iconic as the Jacoby Furniture sign that was restored several years ago and is still seen on the building that is now home to the Jacoby Art Center.

Bill Moyer says this is a project that needed to be done.

Moyer comments

The hotel closed a little over a year ago, but the businesses along Market Street, including an Edward Jones office and WBGZ Radio remain.  The building was completed in 1819 by Major C.W. Hunter, but its original use is unknown.  It did not become a hotel until 1909, when it was purchased by a group of Alton businessmen.
