Alton Memorial Hospital hosts its 14th annual Heart Fair Saturday, and a large crowd is expected. The fair is designed to help area residents assess their heart and learn about prevention and treatment for heart disease. It will feature guest speakers, including experts in the medical field and a special story from a Bethalto couple and how they dealt with a heart emergency.
Steve Bivens heart stopped beating the morning of December 2, and thanks to the quick action of his wife Nancy, he is alive today. Nancy began compressing his chest with one hand and dialing 9-1-1 with the other. Once paramedics arrived, they had to shock his heart multiple times before restoring a beat and he began to breath again on his own. Bivens learned he had an electrical problem with his heart, and has since had treatment to help him recover. Alton Memorial Hospital Spokesperson Dave Whaley says the Bivenses story will be just a part of the day:
The fair runs tomorrow from 9:am to 12:30pm and is free. Registration is requested if you'd like to receive a free lunch, and you can do so by calling 1-800-392-0936 today. Nancy Bivens is the sales manager at WBGZ, and her husband Steve fills in from time to time, as well as working in radio in St. Louis.
