We can now hear what the bishop of Peoria said in his homily last Saturday about President Obama and Nazis. Bishop Daniel Jenky (pictured) said the president wants to treat churches the way the Nazis and communists did. “Hitler and Stalin, at their better moments, would just barely tolerate some churches remaining open, but would not tolerate any competition with the state in education, social services and health care,” Jenky preached.

Jenky went on to say that Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin allowed churches to stay open, but denied them influence in society. The Diocese of Peoria offered a clarification in which it said the bishop’s remarks were taken out of context. The Anti-Defamation League is eager for the bishop to recognize he is in error and to apologize, calling the bishop’s sermon “over the top.” Americans United for Separation of Church and State says the bishop may have put the church’s tax-exempt status in jeopardy for “illegal electioneering.” The IRS rarely revokes a church's tax-exempt status.
