A home near the small northern Madison County town of Worden was leveled by an explosion Thursday. The early morning blast on Possum Hill Road was reportedly heard for several miles. The home had been vacant for more than a year and no one was injured.
Firefighters say a gas leak possibly led to the explosion, which may have been initially caused by someone trying to steal copper pipe. The investigation is being led by the Illinois State Fire Marshall's Office and the Madison County Sheriff's Department.
