A museum in Elmhurst is a repository of artifacts from historic theaters. The Theatre Historical Society of America, based in the York Theater building, has artifacts from 17,000 theaters across the country.

“It’s very difficult to define exactly what all is here because we have such a huge, vast array of things,” says director Rick Fosbrink. “Primarily, we have a lot of images, we have photographs, we have blueprints, we have documents, ledgers, marketing materials. We have some artifacts from buildings.” Many of these theaters were built and had their heyday a century ago; they often helped anchor Main Street or a downtown area, some still stand, many don’t.
