The weather played a roll in power outages across the River Bend this morning. Several thousand Ameren customers were without power at one point today in Godfrey, Alton, and Brighton. There were also outages reported in parts of Edwardsville and Glen Carbon. The power across much of the area has since been restored.
According to a statement from Ameren Spokeswoman Victoria Busch earlier this morning:
"The outage this morning affecting Alton and Godfrey customers we believe was due to high winds and malfunction with the switching device. We have crews on the scene to manually assess the problem. At about 4:40am power was interrupted to about 3,400 in Alton but was restored by 5:27am. The outage continued to roll out to the Godfrey customers, affecting about 1,500. Though the power interruption is designed to protect the system from further damage, it is an inconvenience for customers so we are working as quickly and safely as possible."
