The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center is announcing plans for the $3,000 grant it recently received from Illinois American Water through its 2012 Environmental Grant Program. The money will provide educators with activities, curriculum guide and tools for participating in The Mississippi River XChange (MRX) program. MRX is a platform for high school students along the Mississippi River to share information about their watershed and source water protection.
The MRX program is designed to connect high school students with one another and with the river through hands-on river-related activities and lessons, according to NGRREC Environmental Educator Natalie Marioni.
With these funds, Marioni says they will be able to provide teachers and students in this and other regions along the river with specialized materials for studying the river through a watershed approach, thus creating a platform for river stewardship.
