Heroin use continues to take lives in the Metro-East, and it looks like Madison County is on pace for more than two-dozen overdose deaths this year. In 2009, Madison County reported 9 heroin deaths, in 2010 the number doubled. In 2011 there were 26, and 21 last year. At the moment, there have been 14 confirmed heroin-related deaths for 2013, including two in Alton over the past month.
Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn:
He says the drug continues to crossed all socioeconomic categories, affecting all races, ages, men and women. Several agencies from all levels of law enforcement are employing strategies to fight the growing popularity of the drug, and are using a multi faceted approach including education and aggressive prosecution of those pushing the drug.
