The crops are almost all the way out of the fields. Corn and winter wheat are 97 percent harvested, and soybeans are 98 percent harvested, according to the latest – and last – weekly crop report from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

“We had pretty good yields for soybeans,” says Brad Schwab, the service’s Illinois field office director. Schwab says the soybean yield was 46 bushels per acre. “That wasn’t that far off the trend, but the corn yields are a little bit disappointing,” says Schwab, recalling the hot weather of July and August. The final yield report for 2011 comes out January 12.
