The Alton Branch of Habitat for Humanity has two homes it hopes to complete in 2015. There is one new home under construction and a rehab project under way in the city and families have been selected for both. The local group is always looking for volunteers and donations to keep the construction moving each week.

Emery says Habitat for Humanity is not a handout, but instead a partnership with the families that are assisted. The family must provide work on the home they will receive, and when it’s completed, will then have to pay an interest free mortgage. The new owner will also be responsible for all utilities, taxes and the upkeep that comes with home ownership. For more information on getting involved, go to www.altonhabitat.org
