In addition to a ban on assault weapons, the governor is looking for ways to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. Gov. Pat Quinn puts it this way: “Mental health records … are very, very important that we have those complete and accurate, because we do not want disturbed or deranged individuals to have access to deadly weapons,” he said.

He wants to beef up record-keeping at the state and local level so that police will know who is mentally unstable, or who has a record of violent acts or domestic violence that would make them ineligible to possess a firearm. State lawmakers will soon be dealing next year with the governor’s request to ban assault weapons, and a court-ordered concealed carry law.
