Illinoisans want their vote to matter, according to Ryan Blitstein, president of Change Illinois. The group has launched a campaign to reform what they call a “broken system” of political district-drawing. “Instead of the current situation, which is either the Republican Party or the Democratic Party or their leaders dominating the process, what this will do is pull partisanship out,” Blitstein said.

The initiative would create a commission made up of four Democrats, four Republicans and three unaffiliated members. The members would use data and statistics from each district to draw the maps. Blitstein wants the initiative on the 2014 election ballot. To achieve that, he will need 300,000 signatures.
