The areas first cooperative grocery store is scheduled to open next month after meeting its initial fundraising goal. Grassroots Grocery needed to raise $50,000 to get off the ground and hit that mark this week with a final push for members and donations. The tentative opening date is August 22.
The store, located at 415 Ridge Street in Alton, sits inside the former Central Electric building. Co-founder Sara McGibany tells the Big Z the initial idea came from a desire to serve the neighborhood:

Grassroots Grocery will be open to the public, but members who pay $100 per year to support the store receive a 10-percent discount when shopping. There will also be discounts for those who are of lower income and receive state assistance. The store received a $1,000 donation this week from the family of the late owner of Central Electric, J. Michael Kane, to help put it over the top.
