The Grand Theater in Alton is being boarded up, after falling into disrepair over the last several years. The theater was at one time being considered for placement on the city's historical landmark registry. It has not seen any business-related activity since it was the site of a haunted house in the mid 1990's.
Over the years, the paint had started to flake, there were cracks in the windows, and a tree began growing out of the south-facing wall near the roof. The city recently met with the owner of the building about concerns over its appearance, and an agreement was reached to spruce it up. Last week, the entrance was covered with plywood and painted, and there is work to do the same to the second story windows this week. The Grand last showed a movie in 1977.
