It’s only been talked about for three or four decades, but Gov. Pat Quinn says he’s confident planes will take off and land at Peotone in his lifetime. He signed a bill which, among other things, lets the Illinois Department of Transportation begin securing contractors for the “south suburban airport.” That’s despite a lack of commitment from passenger airlines.

“We have the largest inland port in America, right here in the south suburbs,” the governor said in signing the bill in University Park. Responding to a question about whether the airport would ever really be built and operational, he said, “Well, yes. I have an excellent secretary of transportation. Her name is Ann Schneider. She knows how to get things done.” The bill is a big one, including a basketball arena in Chicago for DePaul University, development of a Port of East St Louis, and incentives which could lead to a fertilizer plant in Tuscola.
