Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is asking the federal government to help fund recovery efforts in storm-damaged parts of the state. He's asking President Obama to declare five southern Illinois counties as major disaster areas after a tornado destroyed more than 100 homes and killed seven people.
If Quinn's request is approved, residents in those counties would be able to apply for grants and low-interest loans. Businesses could apply for low-interest SBA loans. Federal and state officials will meet with local leaders next week to determine the total expense related to the storms. The feds could help cover up to 75-percent of the costs.
