Gov. Pat Quinn is marking the 12th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, proclaiming today as Patriot Day in Illinois. Quinn says today is not only for remembering those killed in the terrorist attacks, but also for those in the military who lost their lives in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“They went above and beyond the call of duty to help us all,” Quinn said. “We had to have heroes come forward to defend our democracy, to protect us from terrorism.” Two service members from the state died in the attack on the Pentagon. Since Sept. 11, 2001, Quinn says 306 Illinoisans have died serving in the military.
