After failing to find a candidate for the ballot in the March primary, the Madison County Republican party has decided to back a former public defender in his run for State’s Attorney. 73-year-old Ron Williams of Glen Carbon announced Wednesday his intention to challenge Democratic incumbent Tom Gibbons this November.
Williams retired from the Madison County public defender’s office four years ago after working there for 12 years. Prior to that, he worked as an attorney and also served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1993. Since his retirement, he’s done pro bono work as an attorney and said he decided to run because he felt the state’s attorney’s office was becoming too political and felt there could be stronger prosecution of serious crimes. Williams must still obtain 231 signatures to get his name on the ballot this fall and has until the close of business on May 31.
