While voters in several communities are deciding whether to allow a choice of electric power suppliers, the Village of Godfrey is going ahead with a contract to secure power for its day to day use. Last year, the Village secured the services of Dale Kelley, who specializes in finding electricity for municipalities and other large-scale consumers, at a reduced price. After a successful first year, he has come back to the village with a new offer from its current supplier.
The Village currently buys its power from MidAmerican Energy. While shopping the market to see what is available, Kelley says MidAmerican shot him an offer that stunned him.
What that means is Godfrey could save about $26,000 a year on its electric bill. Village Trustees approved the pursuit of a one-year contract, to lock into the rate while it is still comparatively low. Kelley says electric rates have been falling for a number of months.
