Last year’s harsh winter depleted salt supplies around the region, but Godfrey appears to be in good shape. Still, with last weekend’s early start for frozen precipitation, the Village’s Director of Maintenance is looking into the possibility of needing to restock its supply at some point. What he found out was less than encouraging.
Jim Lewis says if you can find salt, it is selling for about twice what they paid earlier this year when they placed their order, and the suppliers want to sell in large amounts. But he says with the new computerized salt spreaders, they should be able to use less while getting the same effectiveness.

Lewis says the computerized salt spreaders worked so well last year, the village bought two more for a total to five. He says the spreaders use about half as much salt that the old kind, and still do a fantastic job on the streets.
