The issue of video gambling in Godfrey will go to the voters. A group of gambling opponents filed a petition with the Village Clerk asking if video gambling will be allowed in Godfrey. There were no formal objections to the petition filed, so the paperwork has been sent to the county for inclusion on the spring ballot
Many concerned residents and bar owners spoke at length about their position on the subject at village board meetings late last year. Trustee Mike Stumpf is glad the public will have a chance to weigh in at the polls.
Mayor Mike McCormick is pleased the community will have a chance to weigh in.
Video gambling was passed by legislators in Springfield, with the provision that if a community did not chose to ban the practice, it would be allowed. Godfrey took no action at the time. The April question will be non-binding.
