Fire departments around the country are rated by the Insurance Services Office. A rating of 1 is the best that can be achieved, which is a rarity in this country. The Godfrey Fire Protection District recently scored a 3 / 3x. That is an improvement over their 2010 score of 4 / 9.
The second number is the ranking for the rural areas that are not serviced by hydrants. The improvement comes from a change in grading to recognize the areas without hydrants are protected by a department with a #3 rating. Godfrey Fire Protection District Chief Eric Kambarian tells The Big Z improving to a #1 ranking is out of reach right now.

Out of nearly 49,000 fire departments nationwide, only a little more than 4,200 have an ISO rating of class 3 or better. That means the Godfrey Fire Protection District is in the top 10% of departments nationwide.
